Courageous Color: How to Capture Relativity and Make Confident Designs
Date: 5/4/2023
Time: 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Why did that fabric look great on the bolt but fall flat in your quilt? Why do those pretty solids not always result in a pretty quilt? Why does the fabric that worked great in one quilt make you cringe in another?
Color is relative. We perceive color differently every time the surroundings change. Color theory is always a hot topic in the quilting community. However, color theory is typically taught using paint that can be mixed, swirled, and blended to achieve the desired effect. But what about quilters typically interacting with color in large swaths of commercially available hues?
In this lecture, we will discuss how value, saturation, proportion, optical illusion, simultaneous contrast, and more affect how we interpret color. Then we’ll talk about implementation methods for harnessing the power of perception to alter the visual effects of color in your quilts.
