Be a Museum Curator: Artifact, Fossil and Bone Identification Workshop, 5:00-7:00 PM

A team comprised of museum curators and education specialists will be at tables with examples of ancient American Indian artifacts, fossils, and animal bones, representative of what might be found in central Ohio. The team will be available to talk to visitors about the museum specimens, but also to address questions such as ‘How do you know whether you’ve found an important artifact or just an oddly-shaped rock?’ and ‘Where can I go to look for fossils?’ In addition, the team members will identify objects that visitors bring in, which they have found in their gardens or inherited from their grandparents, etc. If visitors have brought in something significant, the team will assist them in documenting their discovery so the information can be added to the appropriate scientific database. The hands-on specimens as well as the nearby exhibits will provide specimens for comparison with the objects visitors bring in for identification.

WHY WE STILL DON’T KNOW (FOR SURE) WHO BUILT SERPENT MOUND
A lecture by Brad Lepper, Senior Curator of Archaeology for the Ohio History Connection, 7:00 PM

Scientists have many ways to determine how old something is. You’ve probably heard of radiocarbon dating, for example, however, each of these various methods has limitations.

Ohio’s Serpent Mound is an enormous ancient American Indian sculpture of a snake. It’s a National Historic Landmark and it’s on the United States’ Tentative List of sites to be considered for nomination to the United Nations’ World Heritage List. So it’s kind of embarrassing that after more than 150 years of archaeological investigations, we still don’t know for sure how old it is.

In this presentation, Dr. Lepper will review the history of efforts to figure out the age of Serpent Mound and discuss why we still don’t know (for sure) which of Ohio’s ancient American Indian cultures built Serpent Mound. A short Q&A session will follow the lecture.
